FAQ – Q&A and Such
Many times we get questions about who we are, why do the show, why we suck so bad so here is some of the answers to questions we have gotten and statements people have made about our videos.
Why on earth did you start a crappy fishing show?
The real impetus was a Sunday morning spent watching fishing shows and realizing that 99% of them were crusty old pros fishing in stocked water or fishing in some far flung location that most people will never visit. The only real show was Hog Quest and I knew that if those guys could do a show, we could do a show that might not be comparable, but was at least watch-able and real.
You guys drink, cuss and ogle hot women, what is up with that?
Beer is good, Tequila is lovely, people cuss when they fish, and there is nothing wrong with looking at women. The fact is that we rail against the conventions of ‘political correctness’ and have never planned on moving our show to the TV because we want to do a fishing show that was true to life.
Do you ever actually catch fish?
Yes we do, however unlike the shows on TV, we don’t edit 3-4 days of fishing together to make it look like we are knocking them dead. Real fishermen know that sometimes it can be a loooong time before you have a day where the fish are smoking hot.
You have had Reverend Poon in your videos, is he for real?
Yes he is, and he is an ordained minister. Do his blessings on our fishing trips help? The definitely don’t hurt. You can catch up with him on Twitter if you like! Reverend Poon on Twitter
Q&A Department
Q: In your video “Chinook Salmon fishing on Puget Sound”, You guys catch a fish using a diver. Is it safe to assume that you were using a Deep 6? Anyway, the question I have for you is, what were you using behind the diver? I only ask because I can’t put downriggers on a sailboat (well I know I can, but it is the family boat and I don’t know what it will look like to have a downrigger hanging off the side of a sailboat….know what I mean?). Anyway, in your opinion, how successful have you guys been when using divers?
A: We normally run our first two lines off the Downriggers and then another off the back with a diver if we have more people on the boat. I don’t recall what brand of diver it was, but for the most part any of them really do a decent job of getting your line down off the top.
How effective they are depends on what we are fishing for. For Chinook, you are going to have a hard time getting deep enough to fish conventional Chinook holes as they are usually 100′-120′ down. Divers just won’t get down that far. For Coho and the other Salmon, we have had good luck with them and I think the motion of the boat reacting to the diver is actually a plus for attracting fish.
That being said, there are some secondary areas that are in the 40′-60′ range that you will catch Chinook (and other Salmon in.) They are on the edge of banks and along Seaweed beds. You will most likely have better luck working the shallow flats in the early morning and late evening for Chinook as they hide down deep during the day.
Lastly, don’t forget that Downriggers are a new toy. Many a decade have gone by where fishermen did just fine by jigging and Mooching, and some areas are still better fished with those techniques than by dragging lures behind a ball.
